Locke argued that our “lives, liberties and estates” are our property because we personal our bodies and mix our labour with our environment. European Union law is the first and so far the one instance of a supranational law, i.e. an internationally accepted authorized system, other than the United Nations and the World Trade Organization. Given the trend of accelerating world financial integration, many regional agreements—especially the African Union—seek to observe a similar mannequin. In the EU, sovereign nations have gathered their authority in a system of courts and the European Parliament. These institutions are allowed the power to enforce authorized norms both against or for member states and citizens in a fashion which is not attainable by way of public international law.
